Why is it that a new born baby girl is dressed up in pink and a baby boy in blue to differentiate between the two sexes?
How often do you see a guy wearing pink when you go out to eat?
How often do you walk into the men's aisle and see pink colored clothing's?
How often do you see a guy with flowers on his shirt?
Many questions arose in my mind as i grew older and i was expected to behave a certain way in front of other people.
To dress like a girl, to sit like a girl, to talk like a girl. to walk like a girl and to "behave" like a "girl".
I never understood why it was so important for a girl to stay within the boundaries in order to be accepted by society and to be happy. I never understand why it is so important for a girl to fit in, in order to be happy.
And lets be real, everyone wants to be happy, and I believe that true happiness comes from within, when you accept all your abilities and disabilities and still consider yourself "beautiful".
So, a few days ago, my Khala was over and she was talking to my cousin brother over the phone who was home and asking him if the maid cleaned the house and if he boiled the milk and my other relative was there as well and said, "Boys don't do chores like that." I remained quiet.
An hour later, I was with my cousin sister in my room who was getting her hair straightened, and she asked me, "Do you find it weird when guys use hairdryers and straighteners?" And I was just looking at her like no, I thought these stuff weren't based on sexes.
Boys dont get to express how they feel in many situations. Because we think showing weakness is "girly". Because its shameful for men to be weak. Because its shameful for men to be like "women".
But if you look at it from another perspective, we think that men hurt by women are pathetic, and most insults towards men attack their masculinity. And a man with a negative body image is unmanly. We don't understand the fact that the same sexism that hurts women also hurts men. Men are equally affected as women. Probably even more, but who's asking them? no one.
Gender equality is not a woman's issue. Its a human issue. It affects all of us. But if we work together, we can end sexism, because listening to each other helps all of us.
So, fuck gender roles. Do whatever you want, what your heart desires and something you feel is the right thing to do.
And talking about one group's issue doesn't
mean that we are belittling another group. Sexism isn't "Us vs. Them" its "Us vs. Our lack of understanding".
